Systems: Engineering Intern (New York) - Summer 2025

Join our Technology team in New York

The D. E. Shaw group seeks motivated individuals with impressive records of academic and/or professional achievement to join us as Systems engineering interns. Engineers at the firm are responsible for designing, developing, and managing the firm’s global technology infrastructure. This role features a mix of software development and infrastructure work, such as building a wide range of technical solutions in areas including Linux and Windows management, database infrastructure, application engineering, DevOps, information security, and more. Some teams that engineering interns might work with include Application Engineering, Information Security, Platform Engineering, Quant Systems, and Site Reliability Engineering. The role offers the opportunity to be part of an inclusive, collaborative, and engaging working environment. This roughly 12-week program will take place in New York and is expected to run from June to August 2025.

        What you’ll do day-to-day

Your responsibilities may include developing full-stack web applications, building solutions to help find software vulnerabilities, administering various infrastructure-level systems, and/or developing efficiency improvements for all platforms. Your specific projects will be matched to your interests and experience. Some recent examples include building automation for operating system upgrades, optimizing large-scale infrastructure operations, enhancing our security information and event management systems, and collaborating with teams across Systems to enhance and deploy a full-stack web app for firmwide use.

        Who we’re looking for

        • We’re interested in highly accomplished students working towards a degree in computer science, computer engineering, or another technical discipline, or who have similar interests or work experience.
        • Candidates should have a solid foundation in computer science demonstrated through past internships, personal projects, or contributions to open-source platforms.
        • Applicants who demonstrate keen problem-solving abilities and intellectual curiosity, as well as collaboration, communication, organizational, and time management skills, will thrive in this role.
        • Proficiency in algorithms, software development, and Systems infrastructure, plus exposure to Python, JavaScript, or Go, is beneficial for this role.
        • Practical experience working with technical infrastructure in one of our focus areas (Windows, Linux/UNIX, database management, or information security) is a plus but not required.
        • We welcome applicants currently enrolled in a four-year undergraduate program or graduate degree program across all fields of study. No previous finance experience is necessary. Students who apply to this internship are usually approaching their final year of full-time study.
        • The position offers a monthly base salary of $16,000 to $21,000, overtime pay, a sign-on bonus of $10,000, travel coverage to and from the internship, and choice of furnished summer housing or a $10,000 housing allowance. It also includes a $3,300 stipend for self-study materials and a $4,000 stipend for personal technology equipment. If you have any questions about the compensation, please ask one of our recruiters.
